PHOENIX (AP) -Manu Ginobili says he’s “closer than ever” to an agreement on a new contract with the San Antonio Spurs.
Ginobili made the comment before the Spurs played the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night.
Ginobili says reports that the three-year extension was done were a bit premature. He says there are still “a couple of things to figure out” but he’s happy with the progress of the talks.
The Argentine star is in his eighth NBA season. After a slow start, he has averaged 22.5 points per game since the All-Star break, a turnaround that coincided with the Spurs’ rise into playoff position in the West.
Coach Gregg Popovich says the two sides are talking a lot more now than they did earlier to see if a deal can get done.
