The Lakers (41-17) maintained their one-game lead over the defending champion San Antonio Spurs for best record in the Western Conference, and lead Phoenix and New Orleans by two. ... Tim Duncan had 31 points and 15 rebounds and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks 97-94 for their seventh straight win. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Dallas, which is in a tight race with the Spurs and two other teams for the Southwest Division lead.
The Clippers waived injury-prone Sam Cassell on Thursday, after he missed four straight games with a sprained right wrist. He averaged 12.8 points, 4.7 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 25.7 minutes in 38 games. Earlier in the season, the point guard missed 12 games with a strained left calf.
