NEW YORK (AP) -David Stern wants to set the basketball record for attendance, even if it won’t be a record for the new Cowboys Stadium.
The NBA commissioner is OK with next Sunday’s All-Star game falling short of the largest crowd in the building’s history, since it should easily attract the biggest audience ever for basketball.
The NBA expects more than 80,000 fans. Both Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban have said they hoped the NBA would try to surpass 100,000. Cuban said recently the NBA could easily beat the stadium record of 105,121.
Stern said Friday that creating comfortable seating for the fans would make that almost impossible. But the league will be proud to shatter the basketball record of 78,129, set for a college game at Detroit’s Ford Field in 2003.
