TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -Attorneys in the reckless manslaughter case of former NBA star Jayson Williams are scheduled to square off in front of New Jersey’s Supreme Court.
The high court is to hear arguments Tuesday concerning what role a racial slur uttered by an investigator will play when Williams is retried.
The investigator who made the remark didn’t testify in Williams’ first trial and has since retired. Williams was convicted in 2004 of trying to cover up the shooting of hired driver Costas “Gus” Christofi but acquitted of aggravated manslaughter. The jury deadlocked on the reckless manslaughter count.
Prosecutors didn’t divulge the slur until 2007. Williams has been free on bail since the shooting.
