OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -Oklahoma City guard Desmond Mason will miss the rest of the season after hyperextending his right knee during the Thunder’s 114-102 overtime victory over Memphis on Wednesday night.
Thunder general manager Sam Presti said Thursday that an MRI exam revealed bruising to Mason’s right femur and tibia bones. Team physicians will perform arthroscopic surgery to remove debris caused by the hyperextension.
A fan favorite, the 6-foot-5 Mason appeared in 39 games this season, starting 19 of them and averaging 7.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists.
Presti said the timing of the injury will prevent Mason from returning this season.
“We are disappointed to lose Desmond for the remainder of the season,” Presti said. “He is a valuable part of our efforts on and off the court. We will support Desmond and work with him throughout the rehabilitation process.”
