HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) – Tony Stewart’s crew chief isn’t sure if he’ll be back with the championship-winning team.
Darian Grubb says he was told he wouldn’t return to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2012, a strange split for a team that won five of the 10 races in the Chase for the championship.
Stewart won the season finale Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway to take his third series championship and first as a driver/owner. Grubb and Stewart gave little indication that things would change.
Grubb was informed of the decision following last month’s race at Charlotte. There had been speculation about a breakup for months after Stewart fired his competition director midway through the season.
Grubb left Hendrick Motorsports at the end of 2008 to join SHR as Stewart’s crew chief.
