The Associated Press has learned that Carl Edwards will stay with Roush-Fenway Racing.
A person familiar with the negotiations says that Edwards has agreed to a multiyear contract extension to remain with his current team. The person spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because the deal will not be announced until later Thursday morning.
Edwards is the current Sprint Cup Series points leader and the top driver on the free agent market. He has done his negotiations privately and heavily considered an offer to leave Roush for Joe Gibbs Racing.
In the end, he chose to stay with the team that gave him his break in NASCAR in 2002 and currently has him in position to win his first Sprint Cup championship.
