INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – NASCAR officials are considering a rule change that would prevent the top 35 drivers in points from having guaranteed starting spots beginning next season.
The rule has been in place since 2005. On Thursday, vice president for completion Robin Pemberton told a group of reporters Thursday that he has discussed the potential change with some teams.
Pemberton also says there should be provisional spots available to drivers who “have a bad day” and insisted that no decision has yet been made.
But Pemberton acknowledges fans want to see the fastest cars start the race.
Pemberton says series officials also could change testing rules.
