INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Double-file restarts. Grumpy drivers. Back-room deals. Twitter feuds. Is this IndyCar or NASCAR?
The lead-up to Sunday's 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 has provided the kind of drama that typically surrounds a NASCAR weekend. The addition of double-file restarts - a concept introduced by NASCAR last year - has drivers on edge over safety concerns.
Pole-sitter Alex Tagliani calls it ``a terrible idea,'' but IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard says the series implemented the idea after consulting with drivers, owners and sponsors.
Team owner Chip Ganassi says he understands the drivers' concerns but thinks they need to keep an open mind when it comes to changing things up. Ganassi says it's important for there to be continuity from series to series so that auto racing fans know what they're watching.
