CONCORD, N.C. (AP) – Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s losing streak has reached 103 races, and he’s no longer guaranteed an automatic berth in the upcoming $1 million All-Star event.
His last shot to qualify before the May 21 race comes Sunday, at Dover International Speedway. A victory there would be his first since 2008 and earn him a coveted spot in the Sprint All-Star race.
Should Earnhardt fail to win this weekend, he still has two different chances to get into the All-Star race. The winner of the last-chance Sprint Showdown advances into the main event, as well as the winner of a fan vote.
Earnhardt is NASCAR’s eight-time defending most popular driver, but he says he’s not taking the fan vote for granted and wants to race his way into the All-Star event.
