Michael Shank Racing is running out of time to get an engine for its Indianapolis 500 entry.
Shank last week filed an entry for driver Jay Howard, and said he has sponsorship for the May 27 race. But he doesn't have an engine and if Chevrolet or Honda don't give the team an engine lease in the next few days, Shank says he can't enter the Indy 500.
Shank announced last October he had formed an IndyCar team with NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger. But the combination of IndyCar's current engine shortage and sponsorship issues prevented him from running the full season.
The engine problems facing the series may now cripple his Indy 500 effort, and put the race in danger of not having a full 33-car field.
