AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Tony Stewart is trying to put last week’s disappointing finish in the Daytona 500 behind him.
After finishing 13th in the season opener, the driver known as Smoke has shifted his focus to this weekend’s race at Phoenix International Raceway, rather than worrying about last Sunday.
Stewart was in good position to win his first Daytona 500, sitting second as the cars came out of the final restart. He tried to hook up with Mark Martin as a drafting partner, but never could get in synch. A few other cars slipped in between and Stewart slipped back, ending up 13th.
That left a driver who’s won just about everywhere in almost everything 0 for 13 in the Great American Race.
