Hamlin wins once again
HAMPTON, GA (TheSpread) – Denny Hamlin managed to get his second straight NASCAR victory on Sunday night, as he took the win in the AdvoCare 500 from Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Hamlin got the win thanks to a little luck. Martin Truex Jr. was on his way to ending a 191-race winless streak but a caution flag came out with just a handful of laps to go. With the leaders needing to pit, Hamlin’s crew got him out front on the 2-lap restart and the rest was history.
According to oddsmakers, Hamlin had 8/1 odds to win Sunday’s race, which means a $100 wager on Hamlin to win will pay out an additional $800.
Hamlin fended off a few passing attempts from Jeff Gordon on the final two laps. Gordon needed a win to secure a spot in the Chase for the Championship, but he had to settle for second place instead.
Hamlin now moves up to seventh in the standings. He has a series-best four wins on the year. The top 10 drivers in the standings are locked into the Chase and Kasey Kahne likely has the first Wild Card spot locked up with two wins. Kyle Busch has a 11-point lead on Gordon for the final Wild Card spot, but any driver with at least one win still has a shot if they win next Saturday’s race, the final race before the Chase begins.
