The FedEx 400 will highlight this weekend’s action at Dover International Speedway. Dover, also known as the Monster Mile, is like no other track on the circuit in that drivers either love or hate it, with the latter being the case on most occasions.
What makes Dover so unique is its concrete racing surface, which is the only time drivers in the Sprint series will race on it all year. Throw in the 24-degree banking in the turns and you have one of the faster tracks on the circuit. The only track similar to it is Bristol, so when handicapping this race you’ll want to look for drivers who not only have done well in Dover, but at Bristol as well.
Johnson has won three of the last four at the Monster Mile, with the one loss coming when NASCAR caught him speeding on pit road during the last round of green flag pit stops. (He was leading the race at the time.) Over his career, he has seven wins and 11 top-10 finishes in 18 starts here, and deserves to be the overwhelming favorite this week.
One of the many nicknames that has been given to Edwards is “Concrete Carl”, due to the fact that he has always excelled on concrete tracks in every series he has raced in. Over the last 10 races here, Edwards has eight top-10 finishes, six top 5s and one win. Edwards leads all drivers over the last 10 races at Dover, with an average finish of 5.7. He also leads all drivers since the switch to the COT car, with an amazing 5.0 average finish. After winning earlier this year at Nashville, which is also a concrete track, we look for “Concrete Carl” to pick another win here.
Live Longshot
Some drivers either love or hate racing at Dover and for Greg Biffle, it’s possibly one of his favorite tracks. In his last 10 starts here, Biffle has two wins and eight top-10 finishes, and has the second best average finish over those 10 races. Biffle has been running up front most of the year and a return to his favorite track might just get him his first win in quite a while at a nice price.
