NEW YORK (AP) – Chase Headley is staying with the Yankees, giving New York insurance at third base in case Alex Rodriguez is unable to play the field regularly.
A person familiar with the negotiations says Headley and the Yankees are working to finalize a $52 million, four-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the agreement had not been completed.
With Headley available to play third in A-Rod’s place, the Yankees would be able to use Martin Prado at second.
The 30-year-old Headley was acquired from San Diego in July. The 2012 NL Gold Glove winner at third, he hit .262 with six homers and 17 RBIs in 191 at-bats for the Yankees.
