KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -The Royals traded right-hander Billy Buckner to the Arizona Diamondbacks for switch-hitting infielder Alberto Callaspo on Friday.
The 24-year-old Callaspo hit .215 with eight doubles and seven RBIs in 56 games for Arizona this year. He appeared mostly as a pinch hitter and split the season between the Diamondbacks and Triple-A Tucson. In the Pacific Coast League, he batted .341 with five home runs, 15 doubles and 30 RBIs.
``The addition of Alberto continues to increase the versatility on our team,'' Kansas City general manager Dayton Moore said. ``He is a young, tremendously skilled player with a great eye at the plate and very solid defensive skills at three infield positions.''
Buckner pitched 34 innings for the Royals this year and was 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA.
