MILWAUKEE (AP) -Left-hander Chris Capuano became a free agent Friday when Milwaukee decided not to tender him a contract for next season.
The Brewers said they were still negotiating with Capuano, who missed last season after injuring his pitching elbow in an exhibition game in March. The 30-year-old decided to try rehabilitation rather than surgery but never returned.
Capuano had been told he would probably need Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career because of a torn ligament.
Capuano won 18 games in 2005 and made the National League All-Star team in 2006. He bolted to a 5-0 record in 2007 but lost his last 12 decisions of the year.
