BOSTON (AP) -The Boston Red Sox have traded outfielder Coco Crisp to the Kansas City Royals for reliever Ramon Ramirez.
A baseball official confirmed the trade to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it had not yet been officially announced.
The trade frees up some money for Boston. Crisp is owed $5.75 million next season, with an $8 million club option for 2010 or a $500,000 buyout. He started 98 games last season while sharing the center field job with Jacoby Ellsbury.
Ramirez is a 27-year-old right-hander who had a 2.64 ERA in 71 2-3 innings last season.
The trade was first reported by ESPN Radio 810 in Kansas City.
