CLEVELAND (AP) -A doctor accused of supplying professional baseball players with illegal performance-enhancing drugs was indicted Monday in a separate case involving a Cleveland police lieutenant.
Dr. Ramon Scruggs, of Santa Ana, Calif., was indicted by a Cuyahoga County grand jury on 13 counts of drug trafficking. He is accused of prescribing steroids over the Internet for non-medical purposes from January 2003 to June 2007.
Scruggs was reported by SI.com in September 2007 to have prescribed Nandrolone and testosterone in the name of Troy Glaus. The following month, espn.com reported Scruggs had prescribed steroids in the name of Scott Schoeneweis.
At the time of the reports, Glaus said “I don’t know anything about that” and Schoeneweis declined comment. The baseball commissioner’s office said on Dec. 6 there was insufficient evidence to penalize Glaus or Schoeneweis for any violation of the sport’s drug agreement with the players’ association.
” Scruggs faces a maximum sentence of 39 1/2 years in prison if convicted.
Cleveland police Lt. Anthony Tuleta, former firefighter Craig Romey, former jail guard Angel Otero, were indicted on charges of drug possession and theft.
Tuleta is accused of submitting $94,000 worth of claims to a health insurer. He was suspended without pay Monday.
It was not known whether Tuleta, Romey and Otero had retained lawyers.
In April, an 11-count indictment was unsealed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif., against Scruggs. It accused him of illegally distributing drugs to baseball players, law-enforcement officers and others. The indictment charged that unidentified agents for players steered clients to Scruggs.
