PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Light rain fell intermittently during batting practice Monday evening ahead of Game 5 of the World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays.
The forecast called for occasional rain Monday night and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. The temperature was to be in the low 40s.
“Obviously, the commissioner is concerned,” said Bob DuPuy, Major League Baseball’s chief operating officer. “We would do everything we could to treat it as close to a normal game as we could. But we’ll have to see what happens.”
Philadelphia led the best-of-seven series 3-1 and was hoping to win the title for the first time since 1980. Game 3 began at 10:06 p.m. after a 91-minute rain delay and didn’t end until 1:47 a.m. It produced the lowest television rating in World Series history.
“We’re ready. We’d rather go ahead and play,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said.
gular season, if a game has become official – meaning the losing team has made 15 outs – it can be shortened by rain.
“It’s not an issue at this point. I don’t think we want to get into that,” Garagiola said.
Asked whether the regular-season rule would be followed, Garagiola said: “See my previous answer.”
There has never been a rain-shortened World Series game.
“There have been a lot of firsts this year,” Maddon said.
