ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -An apparent injury to plate umpire Derryl Cousins delayed Game 6 of the AL championship series between Boston and Tampa Bay for 15 minutes after the third inning on Saturday night.
Cousins was struck in the chest or just under the mask by a foul ball hit by Boston’s Jason Varitek in the second, but remained in the game until the delay.
After the bottom of the third, Cousins and crew chief Tim McClelland talked in front of the Tampa Bay dugout. McClelland then called the Rays off the field and Cousins departed with Tampa Bay trainer Ron Porterfield.
Rays spokesman Rick Vaughn announced Cousins was being examined and was expected to be OK.
McClelland, who had been working first base, put on his gear to work the plate and took over there when play resumed.
Sam Holbrook moved from second to first, Brian O’Nora shifted from third to second, Brian Gorman moved from left to third base and Alfonso Marquez remained in right field. The game continued without an umpire working left field.
