ST. LOUIS (AP) - Yasiel Puig and the Los Angeles Dodgers again came up empty in St. Louis.
Puig struck out four times and the Dodgers wasted several chances with runners in scoring position against Michael Wacha, losing 1-0 to the Cardinals on Saturday and falling behind 2-0 in the NL championship series.
Missing Hanley Ramirez and Andre Ethier from the starting lineup because of injuries, the Dodgers went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position, wasting a brilliant effort by starter Clayton Kershaw.
The series shifts to Dodger Stadium, with Game 3 on Monday night. Los Angeles rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu faces Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright.
Only hours after losing 3-2 in 13 innings, the Dodgers had a runners reach at least second base in four innings. Their best opportunity came in the sixth when Kershaw led off with a single. Carl Crawford then reached on an infield single that Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter gloved with a dive. Carpenter tried for the force at second base but threw the ball away for an error, and the runners ended up on second third base.
But Mark Ellis popped out and, after Adrian Gonzalez was intentionally walked, Puig and Juan Uribe struck out, two of the Dodgers' 13 Ks.
Ellis was also stranded at second in the first when Puig struck out. The Cuban rookie is 0 for 10 with six strikeouts, and has left eight runners on through the first two games.
Los Angeles is 1 for 16 with runners in scoring position overall and have stranded a total of 17 runners in the series. The Dodgers have not scored in 19 straight innings.
Even after Wacha was pulled with two outs in the seventh following Nick Punto's single, the Dodgers couldn't score.
Punto advanced to third on two wild pitches by Kevin Siegrist but Michael Young, hitting for Kershaw, flied out to right field.
The Dodgers went down meekly against the Cardinals bullpen, too, striking out five times to end the game, three in the ninth against Trevor Rosenthal.
