Colorado at Arizona (8:37 p.m. EDT). The Diamondbacks will send Brandon Webb (18-10), the only pitcher to beat Colorado in the last 18 games, against Rockies ace Jeff Francis (17-9) in Game 1 of the NLCS.
The Colorado Rockies added center fielder Willy Taveras to their postseason roster on Wednesday. Taveras has been out for almost a month with a calf injury but convinced the coaching staff he could contribute with a strong showing during a workout Wednesday at Chase Field. He took the roster spot of left-hander Mark Redman.
Cardinals reliever Russ Springer, one of the bright spots for a team that won the World Series in 2006 but didn't make the postseason this year, agreed Wednesday to a one-year contract. The 38-year-old right-hander was 8-1 with a 2.18 ERA and appeared in a career-high 76 games while limiting opposing batters to a .181 average.
``Believe me when I say this: I don't want them to beat us. I think that's stating the obvious. But there are some people over there that I am really close to. ... There's nothing wrong with going up against people that you really have a lot of respect for. Sometimes it makes you want to win more.'' - Red Sox manager Terry Francona on the ALCS with the Indians.
