CHICAGO (AP) -White Sox general manager Ken Williams said Friday his own contract extension was the lowest of his priorities while Chicago tries to make the AL playoffs.
“Whatever is last on the list, that’s under it,” Williams said while sitting in the dugout before the opener of a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians. The White Sox began the night one-half game out in the AL Central.
SI.com reported that Williams and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf had been discussing a multiyear deal that could be completed soon.
“Everything has to be formalized at some point. … This is the sporting world, even if you have a multiyear contract, to me it’s still year-to-year,” Williams said.
“I don’t look at it in terms of anything other than just that from my perspective and from Jerry’s perspective. At the end of the day, if he doesn’t feel like I’m doing the job and wants me out or I feel like that’s it, I’ve had enough, then I’ll head to the exits and you guys will see a smile on my face that you hadn’t seen in a long time.”
the World Series in 2005, their first in 88 years.
Two of his offseason acquisitions, Carlos Quentin and Alexei Ramirez, have played key roles in the White Sox leading the AL Central for most of the season until the Twins knocked them into second with a three-game sweep that concluded Thursday.
