BALTIMORE (AP) -Orioles right-hander Dennis Sarfate will have surgery on his clavicle Tuesday and expects to make a full recovery by spring training.
Sarfate sustained a right distal clavicle fracture while moving into his home in April. He dropped his keys, and when he bent down to pick them up, the door he swung open hit him in the right shoulder.
He pitched through the pain all season until being shut down earlier this month. At this point, Sarfate, who had his first child in June, can’t wait to be pain-free.
“I just want to get back to feeling good. I tried to go with it the whole year and it got worse at times and got better at times,” he said Friday. “I think just being consistent next year will be nice, not to have that pain when I throw but even when I pick up my daughter and stuff like that.”
The surgery will be performed in California by orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum.
“He was real confident that it would be gone and I wouldn’t have this problem ever again,” Sarfate said.
games, including four starts. This will be the first offseason of his career in which he will not throw in November or December.
“I’ll be able to start throwing early January,” he said. “(The doctor) said in early February, I’d probably have to have a day off between outings. Hopefully by the end of March I’ll be right back where I was this year at the end of March.”
Also Friday, manager Dave Trembley said he hopes to have second baseman Brian Roberts back with the team next year.
The Orioles probably will attempt to extend Roberts’ contract during the offseason, but there’s also a chance they could try to trade him.
Roberts has one year left on his current deal and has said he wants to play for a winner. Baltimore is mired in its 11th straight losing season.
“I don’t see Brian Roberts going anywhere. Brian Roberts to me is a Baltimore Oriole,” Trembley said.
“Brian Roberts is going to be the leadoff hitter on this ballclub for a long time. Because of what he means to this team, what he means to this community,” he added. “He is a guy that is a Baltimore Oriole. That simple. I don’t see him going anywhere. I don’t think he wants to go anywhere, which is good for us.”
