PHOENIX (AP) -Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Chad Tracy will be sidelined at least five months and perhaps as long as eight months following microfracture surgery on his right knee.
``There's some healing that needs to occur. It's probably hard to appoint a time line. The best guess is in the five-month range,'' general manager Josh Byrnes said Friday.
Manager Bob Melvin said the impact of the surgery, performed Thursday, is different than it would be for basketball players, where the operation is more common.
``He doesn't have to jump and dunk,'' Melvin said. ``He doesn't have to do some different things, so hopefully it's not that potential 12-month type of thing. I think on the long end they're looking at more like eight months.''
Greg Oden, the overall No. 1 pick in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, had microfracture surgery on his right knee on Sept. 13, and the team said the 7-foot center is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks with full recovery likely to take six to 12 months.
Tracy, who signed a three-year, $13.25 million contract extension last year, appeared in only 76 games this season, batting .264 with seven home runs and 35 RBIs.
Mark Reynolds was called up from Double-A Mobile to take Tracy's place at third base. Reynolds has hit .276 with 15 home runs and 57 RBIs in 102 games.
Tracy has also played first base, where Connor Jackson and Tony Clark are splitting time.
