ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -Tampa Bay Rays rookie Evan Longoria homered three times Thursday night against the Minnesota Twins.
Longoria, who returned to the lineup last Saturday after being sidelined with a broken wrist, hit a two-run homer off Glen Perkins during a five-run first inning. The 22-year-old All-Star third baseman added a solo shot off Philip Humber in the fourth for his third multihomer game, then went deep against Bobby Korecky with none on in the seventh for his 25th homer.
Longoria joined Jonny Gomes as the only Rays to hit three home runs in a game in the club’s 11-season history. Gomes also did it as a rookie, hitting three against the Kansas City Royals on July 30, 2005.
The first-inning drive was Longoria’s first homer since Aug. 5, two days before he fractured his wrist in Seattle.
