OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -Oakland Athletics second baseman Mark Ellis will undergo surgery on his right shoulder Friday back home in Arizona.
A’s manager Bob Geren said Wednesday that Dr. Doug Freedberg will perform the procedure in Scottsdale, Ariz., to repair chips in Ellis’ cartilage. He also has a torn labrum that doesn’t bother him but that might be repaired as well.
Ellis, who can become a free agent after the season, asked the A’s to postpone any further negotiations about a new contract until the A’s are done playing this year. Assistant general manager David Forst said he expects to begin discussions with Ellis’ representatives again soon.
The 31-year-old Ellis has spent his first seven years in the big leagues with Oakland, including 2004, when he was sidelined with an injury to the same shoulder.
ths, so Ellis expects to be ready for spring training 2009.
Ellis batted .233 with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs in 117 games for the A’s this season. He stole 14 bases and committed only four errors. He last appeared in a game Aug. 30 as a pinch hitter against the Minnesota Twins.

A call to Ellis wasn’t immediately returned Wednesday.
Also Wednesday, the A’s called up outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Chris Denorfia from Triple-A Sacramento, one day after the Pacific Coast League champion River Cats won the Triple-A title for the second straight year by beating the Yankees’ affiliate team Scranton/Wilkes-Barre of the International League.
The additions of Gonzalez and Denorfia gives Geren a plethora of outfielders to choose from when writing out the lineup each day.
“I’m just going to try to mix them all in there and give them time,” Geren said. “Every one of them deserves a shot to get some at-bats.”
Gonzalez is with the A’s for the second time this season. He batted .240 with four home runs and 23 RBIs in 77 games from May 30 to Aug. 27. During the PCL playoffs, he hit .406 with two homers and eight RBIs in eight games to earn co-PCL postseason MVP honors along with Denorfia.
