WASHINGTON (AP) -Washington Nationals first baseman Dmitri Young could be done for the season with a strained left hip.
He hasn’t played since being activated from the disabled list a week ago, and manager Manny Acta said Monday it doesn’t look as if Young will be able to return to the field.
Starting catcher Jesus Flores also might not be back this season. He has a left ankle injury.
“Done for the year? That remains to be seen,” Young said. “See what happens tomorrow, the next day, whatever, go from there.”
Asked if he’d like to at least get an opportunity to pinch-hit, Young said: “If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, I’m not going to lose sleep.”
He hit .280 with four homers and 10 RBIs in only 150 at-bats in 2008, missing time with a lower back injury and while receiving treatment for diabetes. His hip problem came while running the bases during a rehab assignment at short-season Single-A Vermont.
oblems. He was an NL All-Star, hit .320, earned comeback player of the year honors – and signed a $10 million, two-year contract extension.
