MILWAUKEE (AP) -A day after Carlos Zambrano pitched a no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs, Ted Lilly nearly provided an encore.
Lilly held the Astros hitless for six innings on Monday before allowing a single to Mark Loretta in the seventh with the Cubs leading 6-0.
Lilly faced the minimum through six innings, allowing only a leadoff walk to Lance Berkman in the second, but the left-hander promptly picked him off.
In the seventh, third baseman Aramis Ramirez booted a ball hit by leadoff batter Reggie Abercrombie that official scorer Tim O’Driscoll ruled an error to keep the no-hit bid intact.
But Loretta lined a clean single to right field that bounced in front of Reed Johnson to end it.
No teammates have ever thrown back-to-back no-hitters.
On Sept. 17-18, 1968, Gaylord Perry of the San Francisco Giants no-hit the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0. The next day, Cardinals pitcher Ray Washburn completed the feat against the Giants in a 2-0 victory.
