BALTIMORE (AP) -Minnesota outfielder Michael Cuddyer was activated from the 15-day disabled list before Saturday’s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles, and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he would only use him as an emergency pinch-hitter for now.
Cuddyer went on the disabled list with a strained tendon in his left index finger June 30, then broke his left foot during a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Rochester on Aug. 8 when he was hit by teammate Garrett Jones’ line drive.
Cuddyer was hitting .252 with three homers and 35 in 62 games before the injuries.
Gardenhire said Cuddyer was “about 60, 70 percent” and would have to be pinch-run for if he reached base because he can’t run full-speed without pain.
“He’s back and he’ll do the best he can. He’s getting better day by day, so we’ll see where he’s at and maybe get him an at-bat,” Gardenhire said.
Cuddyer said he was happy to be activated, and understood that his role would be diminished until he’s fully recovered.
can’t break it just by running on it. Obviously if I get hit by a line drive on there, it’ll break it again, but I can’t do anything by just running,” Cuddyer said.
