PITTSBURGH (AP) -Pirates starter Tom Gorzelanny will miss the rest of the season because of an injury to his left middle finger.
Gorzelanny left his start against the Houston Astros in the third inning Wednesday night with an irritation in his finger. The left-hander was examined Friday, when it was determined that his season was finished.
Gorzelanny went 6-9 with a 6.66 ERA in 21 starts. The 26-year-old, who led Pittsburgh with a 14-10 record in 2007, struggled throughout most of his season, which included a stint at Triple-A Indianapolis.
Jimmy Barthmaier will take Gorzelanny’s spot in the rotation. The right-hander made one start for the Pirates, on June 27 against Tampa Bay, and allowed seven runs in 2 1-3 innings in a 10-5 loss.
Meanwhile, Jeff Karstens might miss his start Saturday because of an abscessed tooth. If Karstens can’t pitch, Russell said he likely will be replaced by Ian Snell, who is Sunday’s scheduled starter.
