CLEVELAND (AP) -Outfielder Mitch Maier, hit in the face by a pitch when the Kansas City Royals were in Cleveland in August, and third baseman Alex Gordon were activated from the 15-day disabled list Friday.
Maier was hit below the right eye on Aug. 20 by a pitch from the Indians’ Zach Jackson. Jackson threw a pitch up and in to Maier, who had squared around to bunt and could not get out of the way in time.
Maier fell to the ground immediately after being hit with blood pouring from his face and was taken to a hospital for X-rays, which revealed a fractured cheekbone. His right eye was swollen shut and he had a large bruise below the eye. Maier was placed on the DL the following day.
Gordon was also injured in that series. He suffered a torn right hip flexor on Aug. 21 and was placed on the DL two days later.
Maier is hitting .339 with four RBIs in 19 games. Gordon is batting .254 with 14 homers and 51 RBIs in 122 games. Both players are left-handed hitters and weren’t in the lineup Friday night against Indians ace Cliff Lee.
