SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -Giants outfielder Fred Lewis will undergo season-ending surgery on Friday to remove a bunion from his right foot.
Lewis started in left field and went 2-for-5 in San Francisco’s 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday before the team announced the decision about the surgery.
“This was a decision that just had to be made because eventually one day I was going to need surgery anyway,” said Lewis, whose right foot was heavily wrapped following the victory. “It just kept nagging on me. Right now is the time.”
Lewis was the Giants’ leadoff hitter much of the season but saw his playing time decrease in recent weeks as San Francisco turned to some of its younger prospects.
The 27-year-old outfielder batted .282 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs in 133 games this season. He also leads the Giants in triples (11) and runs scored (81).
The surgery, to be performed in San Francisco by team podiatrist Dr. Larry Oloff, is expected to sideline Lewis for three to four months. The Giants are optimistic he’ll be ready for spring training next year.
so we want him 100 percent by spring,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “He’s had a good year and we would like to finish out the year with him, but the sooner the better on getting this done and getting him back and moving.”
Lewis has a history of bunions in his family and said it had been extremely painful trying to play with it this year.
“The things that I go through every day in order just to get ready and get out there and play is just ridiculous,” Lewis said. “I just don’t want to go through that anymore.”
