NEW YORK (AP) -Injured reliever Ambiorix Burgos of the New York Mets was arrested Tuesday on assault and harassment charges after being accused of throwing his girlfriend to the ground.
The 24-year-old pitcher was arrested Tuesday morning and his injured girlfriend was treated at a hospital and released, police said.
Burgos appeared in court Tuesday afternoon but didn’t enter a plea and was released, prosecutors said. He’s due in court again Oct. 23.
Burgos faces up to a year in jail if convicted of the more serious misdemeanor assault charge.
He hadn’t returned a message left at the Beverly Hills, Calif., address he gave prosecutors.
Burgos hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since last year. He has spent the entire season on the disabled list while recovering from elbow ligament replacement surgery. The right-hander pitched in the minors last month while on a rehabilitation assignment.
The Mets said they were “disturbed by the allegations.” They said Burgos was in town for reasons unrelated to the team.
