MILWAUKEE (AP) -San Diego pitcher Chad Reineke is out for the season with a shoulder injury, and the Padres called up right-hander Mike Ekstrom and infielder Drew Macias from Double-A San Antonio on Saturday.
Reineke was sent home to Ohio. Padres manager Bud Black said the right-hander has a stress reaction on top of his shoulder blade.
Reineke hasn’t pitched since appearing in relief last Saturday. He was 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA in four outings for San Diego, including three starts. He was acquired by the Padres from Houston in a July 22 trade for lefty Randy Wolf and recalled from Triple-A Portland on Aug. 16.
Black said Reineke just needs to rest and surgery probably won’t be necessary. He is expected to be ready for spring training next year.
“Let the stress reaction to the bone heal,” the manager said.
Eckstrom, who has no major league experience, was 11-8 with one save and a 4.58 ERA in 41 games this season.
Macias, who pinch hit in one game for San Diego last year, batted for Matt Antonelli in the eighth inning of Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Milwaukee.
