CLEVELAND (AP) – The Indians have activated veteran slugger Jason Giambi from the disabled list after he was sidelined for nearly three months.
Giambi has been on the 60-day disabled list since June 12 with knee soreness. The 43-year-old recently did a rehab assignment at Double-A Akron.
While he was out, Giambi gave his No. 25 to for All-Star Jim Thome, who signed a one-day contract to officially retire with the Indians.
Giambi is now wearing No. 72, the number he was given in spring training when he broke in with the Oakland Athletics in 1993.
Manager Terry Francona it thrilled to have Giambi back full-time. Francona said the time away has been hard on Giambi, but ”never once uttered a frustrating word to anybody. I respect him more now than I use to which is hard.”
