DETROIT (AP) -Kansas City Royals shortstop Mike Aviles left the game against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday after he was hit in the hand with a pitch.
Aviles got hit while he was swinging at a pitch from rookie Armando Galarraga in the top of the seventh.
Aviles immediately collapsed to the ground, writhing in pain as he held his hand. The ball traveled a few feet into fair territory. Detroit catcher Dane Sardinha picked it up and tagged Aviles for the final out of the inning.
Aviles was replaced in the field in the bottom of the seventh by Tony Pena Jr.
The rookie shortstop, who joined the team on May 29, has provided a spark offensively. He was hitting .330 with seven homers and 38 RBIs.
