WASHINGTON (AP) -The Atlanta Braves added a veteran arm Friday, activating Elmer Dessens two days after agreeing to terms with the right-hander.
The 37-year-old Dessens is 48-61 with a 4.52 ERA in 356 appearances, including 140 starts, during 11 seasons with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Arizona, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City, Milwaukee and Colorado.
He was signed for the remainder of the 2008 season after going 10-2 with a 4.03 ERA in 20 starts with the Mexico City Red Devils of the Mexican League.
Dessens could be used as a starter or in relief. He was in uniform Friday night for the opener of a three-game series at Washington.
To make room for Dessens on the 25-man roster, Atlanta optioned rookie right-hander Charlie Morton to Triple-A Richmond. Morton was 4-8 with a 6.10 ERA in 14 starts, and had been 0-6 at Turner Field before beating Florida on Thursday.
