DETROIT (AP) – The latest stop for Derek Jeter in his final season is the state where he grew up.
Jeter is back in Michigan, where the New York Yankees play a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers starting Tuesday night. The retiring shortstop was born in New Jersey, but he went to Kalamazoo Central High School in Michigan before being drafted by the Yankees.
Jeter’s father was a big fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions, and Jeter gravitated toward the University of Michigan. In his debut season with the Yankees in 1995, Jeter was set to make a road trip to Detroit – but the day before the game against the Tigers, he and fellow future star Mariano Rivera were sent down to the minors.
