BALTIMORE (AP) -Daniel Cabrera’s loss of velocity and reluctance to address a possible injury has become a concern to the Baltimore Orioles, who had the struggling pitcher meet with the team orthopedist Monday.
After allowing seven runs in 3 2-3 innings against the New York Yankees on Sunday, Cabrera was asked if he was healthy.
“I don’t have an answer for that question right now,” he said. He also refused to explain why the velocity on his fastball had dropped into the low 90s.
Orioles manager Dave Trembley expects the right-hander to start Saturday against Tampa Bay, but said he wanted Cabrera to meet with Dr. John Wilckens “as a precautionary measure” before Baltimore faced the Chicago White Sox.
“I guess they’ll check his arm,” Trembley said. “I talked to (athletic trainer Richie Bancells), and Richie says for the comments that he’s made – or the lack of comments he’s made – we’ll have Dr. Wilckens look at him.”
Cabrera is 8-8 with a 5.24 ERA. He has allowed at least six earned runs in five of eight starts since the All-Star break.
“I’m not trying to diminish if there’s something wrong with his arm,” Trembley said, “but I think the guy is disappointed. He’s upset with himself.”
