TORONTO (AP) -The Blue Jays placed outfielder Brad Wilkerson on the 15-day disabled list Friday with lower back spasms and added utilityman Jose Bautista to the 25-man roster.
Bautista, acquired from Pittsburgh on Thursday for a player to be named, was not in the lineup Friday. He will start at third base Saturday when the Blue Jays face Boston left-hander Jon Lester, manager Cito Gaston said.
The 27-year-old Bautista hit .242 with 12 homers and 44 RBIs in 107 games for Pittsburgh this season, then was sent to Triple-A earlier this month.
Wilkerson began the season with Seattle but was released April 30 and signed with Toronto on May 9. He is batting .219 with three homers and 26 RBIs in 93 games.
“Along with having a little back problem, as far as muscle spasms and things like that, his arm has been bothering him. too,” Gaston said. “But the muscle spasm is what’s keeping him out of the lineup.”
Wilkerson injured his left shoulder diving for a ball in the outfield last month and has been missing time ever since. He last played Sunday, meaning the move to put him on the disabled list is retroactive to Aug. 18.
