ST. LOUIS (AP) -Cardinals reliever Jason Isringhausen, twice demoted from the closer role this season, could miss the rest of the season with an elbow injury, the team said Tuesday night.
“I don’t think it’s career-ending,” St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said. “It’s one of the tough breaks that a team goes through.
“I definitely think he can pitch next year.”
The Cardinals said in a release that an MRI exam revealed right elbow tendinitis and a partially torn tendon, although no ligament damage was found. Rest was prescribed, with no timetable for a return to throwing.
Isringhausen, 35, is 12-for-19 in save chances and is 1-5 with a 5.70 ERA. He’s been stuck on 293 career saves since Aug. 1 and was removed as the closer earlier this month when rookie right-hander Chris Perez was recalled from Triple-A Memphis.
