ANAHEIM, California (AP) Seattle relievers made the pitches they needed to and helped the surging Mariners get another big win with a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night.
Ketel Marte drove in the tiebreaking run at 2-2 in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly, and Leonys Martin scored from second base on a bunt.
Robinson Cano had three hits, Kyle Seager and Chris Iannetta each had two hits and scored a run as the Mariners won for the 10th time in 12 games to move two games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card.
Drew Storen (3-3) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win. Mariners closer Edwin Diaz, who touched 101 mph on the gun, gave up a run and loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but used his off-speed pitches effectively to strike out Jefry Marte and get Andrelton Simmons to ground out for his eighth save in eight chances.
”Obviously our bullpen weathered the storm tonight,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. ”We made pitches and got outs, so it was a nice win.”’
Yunel Escobar went 5 for 5 for Los Angeles, his fifth career five-hit game. Since 2000, only Ichiro Suzuki and Johnny Damon have more with seven each.
Boston climbed past the Orioles into second place in the AL East by sweeping their two game series in Baltimore, taking Wednesday’s second game 8-1. David Price allowed four hits before a rainstorm stopped play for good after six innings, giving Boston a sixth straight win. Jackie Bradley Jr. homered and drove in four runs for the Red Sox.
Baltimore had been in first or second place since opening day. The Orioles’ 39-19 home record is the best in the AL, but they are 2-4 against Boston at Camden Yards.
Toronto consolidated atop the AL East with a 7-4 win to take two of three at the New York Yankees, with J.A. Happ (17-3) winning his 11th consecutive decision to become the first 17-game winner in the majors. Melvin Upton Jr. hit a three-run homer to help Toronto beat New York.
Sagging San Francisco, who had led the NL West for 97 days until Tuesday, lost their fourth straight game with a 6-5 defeat to visiting Pittsburgh. The Giants dropped to 9-21, the worst record in the majors, since the All-Star break.
The Giants had enjoyed a four-run lead before Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer and Matt Joyce had a key two-run single to help the Pirates complete a three-game sweep. McCutchen’s homer, his 17th, capped a six-run rally in the fifth inning that chased Giants starter Matt Cain (4-8).
The Pirates won their fourth straight game and sixth in seven. They remained a game behind St. Louis in the race for the NL wild card.
In Chicago, Jorge Soler hit a three-run homer during a five-run first inning and Jon Lester pitched into the seventh as the Cubs beat Milwaukee 6-1 for their 17th victory in 20 games.
