MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -The Oakland Athletics called up veteran Kirk Saarloos from Triple-A Sacramento before the game against the Minnesota Twins on Monday night.
Saarloos replaces the struggling Dan Meyer, who was optioned to Sacramento after allowing five runs during a 13-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
“He’s a bullpen guy that we can use in situations where we need a ground ball,” A’s manager Bob Geren said.
To make room for Saarloos on the 40-man roster, Oakland designated first baseman Wes Bankston for assignment. Geren said that Saarloos was available to pitch Monday.
This is Saarloos’ second stint with the A’s this season. During a nine-day stretch with the A’s in mid-April, the 29-year-old right-hander compiled a 2.35 ERA in two relief appearances. He was 9-4 with a 4.22 ERA in 22 starts with Sacramento.
Meyer, a left-hander, had allowed nine runs in 14 2-3 innings since being called up on Aug. 3.
