CINCINNATI (AP) -The Reds reinstated first baseman Joey Votto off the bereavement list on Saturday, but plan to give him a couple days to work back into playing shape.
Votto went on the bereavement list a week earlier. At his request, the reason for the absence was not revealed.
Infielder Adam Rosales was called up to fill in for Votto and went 1-for-5 as a pinch-hitter. Rosales was optioned back to Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.
Votto is batting .280 with 14 homers and 53 RBIs. Manager Dusty Baker planned to give him a couple of days to take batting practice before getting him back in the starting lineup.
“He hasn’t hit in a week,” Baker said. “He worked out a couple of times.”
