MIAMI (AP) -The Florida Marlins purchased the contract of veteran catcher Paul Lo Duca from Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday.
Lo Duca signed a minor-league deal with Florida on Aug. 8 after being released by the Washington Nationals following the trading deadline.
This will be the 36-year-old’s second stint with Florida. He was traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Marlins for right-hander Brad Penny in 2004. He was dealt to the Mets after the 2005 season.
Lo Duca, who signed a $5 million, one-year contract with the Nationals as a free agent last December, batted .230 with 12 RBI in 46 games. He missed 52 games this season with two injuries to his right hand – a bruise and a broken hand. Along the way, Lo Duca lost his starting job to Jesus Flores.
The Marlins designated right-handed reliever Justin Miller for assignment following Friday night’s 6-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
