MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Carlos Silva was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with what the Seattle Mariners called tendinitis in his elbow.
The move, made to clear room on the roster for left-hander Ryan Feierabend, came one day after Silva was hit for nine hits and nine runs in 3 1-3 innings against his old team Minnesota. Silva’s record fell to 4-14 with a 6.36 ERA. After signing a four-year, $48 million contract, he has won only one game since April 17.
Feierabend will be officially recalled from Triple-A Tacoma before the game Sunday, and will start against the Twins. He was 7-1 with a 2.04 ERA in 13 starts for the Rainiers.
Interim manager Jim Riggleman said Silva first reported some soreness in his elbow after he was roughed up Friday night, but Silva told the team he felt a problem before that.
“Nothing serious,” Riggleman said. “Something that I think if we were at a different part of the season in the standings and so forth he would pitch through it, but at this point we’d like to take the opportunity to just stretch him out a bit.”
Silva will throw in the bullpen a few times after resting for four or five days.
“Hopefully get him ready to come back in September and be himself,” Riggleman said.
Silva declined to comment, as he did on Friday night.
