CLEVELAND (AP) -The Cleveland Indians signed three draft picks Friday, incluing second-round selection Trey Haley, a highly regarded high school right-hander.
Left-hander Glenn (T.J.) House, taken in the 16th round, and 22nd pick Bryce Stowell, a right-hander from Cal Irvine, also reached agreements.
“Haley got a significant bonus,” Indians’ director of amateur scouting Brad Grant said. “It is in line with what lower first-rounders signed for already this year.”
That would put it in the $1.25 million range for the 18-year-old, who went 8-2 with a 1.55 ERA at Central Heights High School in Nacogdoches, Texas, this year.
Haley struck out 98 in 50 innings during his senior season. He had previously signed a letter of intent to pitch for Rice.
“His signing bonus includes our covering all four years of a college education,” Grant said.
Grant said that both House and Stowell had been considered possible second-round picks prior to the draft, but slipped because of signability issues.
“We’re excited that ownership gave us the resources to sign talent that was way above where they were drafted,” Grant said. “We knew that drafting 29th overall in each round, we had to find ways to be creative in getting players. We feel we’ve accomplished that.”
House, 18, went 7-2 with one save and a 0.82 ERA as a senior at Picayune (Miss.) Memorial High School. As a junior, he struck out 20 in one game, and had signed a letter of intent to pitch at Tulane.
Stowell, 21, went 8-3 with a 3.26 ERA as a sophomore at Cal Irvine. In 88 1-3 innings, he struck out 101 and walked 26 to help the Anteaters advance to the NCAA Super Regionals.
