NEW YORK (AP) -The Kansas City Royals optioned pitcher Kyle Davies to Triple-A Omaha on Friday and recalled right-hander Jeff Fulchino from their top farm team.
Davies took the loss Thursday night against the Chicago White Sox, allowing three runs and nine hits in five innings. The right-hander is 5-4 with a 4.71 ERA in 14 starts.
The Royals have an off day Monday, so they’ll stick with a four-man rotation until they need another starter next Saturday against Detroit. Gil Meche, scheduled to pitch Friday night against the New York Yankees, will likely get the ball again Wednesday at Cleveland in Davies’ slot.
In other news, outfielder David DeJesus was out of the lineup for the second consecutive game because of a sore lower back. He is 1-for-16 since returning to the lineup last Friday after missing five games with back pain.
With DeJesus out, Mitch Maier was slated to start in center field and bat leadoff for the Royals. Maier also would be the team’s backup catcher in an emergency because Miguel Olivo is serving a suspension.
Maier was drafted as a catcher in 2003.
Fulchino was with Kansas City earlier this season. He had a 9.00 ERA in five relief appearances covering six innings.
The Royals also signed their fourth-round draft pick, high school pitcher Tim Melville. The right-hander agreed to a minor league contract with a $1.25 million signing bonus.
